General:

The First Marine Battalion saw service in Cuba, being the first unit to actually land and become engaged. This is a preliminary roster of the battalion. More information  and updated information will be added when it becomes available.

The writer has chosen to use the official government designations for the East Coast stations, barracks, posts and receiving ships where applicable. For instance, although officially designated as "New York Navy Yard," this site was unofficially and popularly referred to as "Brooklyn Navy Yard." It is also to be noted that Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, though actually located on Seavey Island, Kittery, Maine, was also unofficially and popularly referred to as Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, New Hampshire, in many official and unofficial documents. In each case, we have used the official designation.
