The image below shows PELAYO's
braoside guns. This view, very reminiscent of the broadside of a Napoleonic
era ship of the line with its guns poking through gunports, shows some
of the limitations of the vessel. These broadside gunscould not have had
the horizontal range of fire (azimuth) as would guns placed in sponsons
(the guns could not be fired nearly forward or aft).
Note also the unusual shape of the hull. This type
of design can also be seen in on the American cruiser BROOKLYN.
