Please Visit our Home Page to learn more about the Spanish American War

Located in the compartments surrounding the forward shell handling room on OLYMPIA are magazines, or spaces used for storage of projectiles and powder.  The bulkheads surrounding the magazine are finished with painted cork, to help to alleviate the threat of sparks and insulate the space against heat in adjoining spaces. The cork, however, did not exist in 1898.
