A photo of Prince M. Bessey, a private in Battery A of the Maine Artillery Battalion. Bessey was born in 1879 in China, Kennebec Co., Maine.  He enlisted in Maine Volunteer Artillery on May 17,  1898 in Augusta and Was discharged on March 31,  1899 at Savannah, Georgia.    He worked as a salesman in Maine, Mass., New York  and Pennsylvania, meeting his future wife, Nora Smith, in Pittsburgh, PA in 1920.   Prince  retired in 1948 after having worked as a furniture salesman for Gimbel’s Dept. store in  Pittsburgh, PA for many years.   He and his wife, Nora, moved to her home town of  Ceredo, Wayne County, West Virginia where he died in August 1954.   He is buried in  Ceredo.

Martin, Robert J., 1st Lt./ Asst. Surgeon: Of Augusta, Maine, 33 years, Married. Mustered into service as First Lieutenant & Assistant Surgeon on July 20th, 1898; resigned and was discharged by order of Major General Nelson A. Miles, U.S.A., on October 28th, 1898. Commissioned as Captain & Assistant Surgeon of the Second Regiment, Maine National Guard, on November 8th, 1898.

Tukey, William H., 1st Lt./ Asst. Surgeon: Of Damariscotta, Maine. Commissioned as Hospital Steward of the Second Regiment, Maine National Guard, on July 20th, 1897. Member of the Maine National Guard. Appointed as First Lieutenant & Assistant Surgeon on October 29th, 1898, by order of the Governor of Maine.

Smith, John M.: Enlisted as a private in Battery B, 4th United States Artillery Regiment, no date; reported to the Headquarters of the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery Battalion on November 24th, 1898, at the expiration of a Sixty-day sick leave furlough; transferred to the Division Hospital Corps on November 25th, 1898.
 

Battery A: (Organized from Company B and Company D of the 2nd Infantry Regiment, Maine National Guard, of Lewiston, Androscoggin County, Maine. The Battery was mustered into United States service on May 17th, 1898, and is assigned to duty at Fort Popham, Maine. The Battery rejoined the Battalion at Augusta, Maine, on September 2nd, 1898.
