Ernest Slater, 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry
Pvt. Ernest G. Slater, Troop C, 1st Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. Slater was born on June 11, 1876 in
Donegal Ireland, the son of an English Royal Navy veteran who was a lighthouse keeper and an Irish
mother. He grew up in Downderry, South Cornwell, England. Slater emigrated to the U.S. in
the 1890's, joining his brothers who owned the Slater Candy Co. in Newark and Columbus Ohio.
He went on to work on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad where he became a supervisor. He
married Frances S. Culler. The couple had six children. He died on February 27, 1942 and is buried
in Chillicothe Ohio.
