This is a view of the transport CITY
OF
PEKING, sometimes also labelled as the CITY
OF
PEKIN. The vessel, built in 1874, was used as a transport on the
Pacific. She accompanied the USS CHARLESTON
as she called at Hawai'i, captured
Guam, and then landed the first U.S. Army troops in the Philippines.
She is typical of the West Coast transports, being much larger than those
used for the relatively short trips needed on the Atlantic coast.
