This is an image of the U.S. Army transport
MASSACHUSETTS. The ship
was formerly a liner with Bernard Baker's Atlantic Transport Line. As she
awaits at a cargo terminal, her decks are crowded with volunteers in dark
clothing. It is interesting to note that the ship name is painted over
with "No. 22 U.S.A. / Q.M.DEP'T." indicating that the ship was transport
#22 and operated by the Army's Quartermaster Department. The ship would
later be called the U.S.A.T. SHERIDAN.
